Vista: First Impressions

Well I started my initial inspection of Vista today and much to my surprise, Microsoft has made many obvious improvements, including to the Start menu, which in my mind has been much the bane of Windows' usability.

The installation went surprisingly fast (when compared to the install process for WinXP) and after the initial setup was complete (in less than 45 minutes) I saw much of what I expected, a very pretty and minimalistic user interface.

There is a Welcome screen that automatically opens up every time you log in until you opt for it not to open.

This window actually holds a considerable amount of information for adjusting to the new layout and applications in Vista. I clicked on the Start Menu and found that out-of-the-box Vista has beat OS X with application availability.

While you used to have to fish through menus to try to find the application you were looking for, now you have the option of using the same heirarchy setup, though through a tree view rather than side-scroll.

Your other option is to simply start typing the first few letters of the program you wanted to open. The new instant search feature that is built into Vista will simultaneously locate any application(s) listed containing the characters typed.

Conclusion: So far, Vista seems to be user-friendly if not resource-friendly and makes most application surfing much easier than previous versions.

When pranks go bad

Well April and I got back together on Monday, but we decided to keep it a secret and try to play a joke on our friends. The story behind the "why" is that we had gotten together a couple times and hung out just as friends, including going to the college service at our church Sunday night, where we saw several friends, some of whom asked what was going on between us. At the time there was nothing, and we told them exactly that. Well after getting back together the very next day we were decided how to let everyone know when we realised that we were both going to a Christmas party on Wednesday. We thought it would be funny if we went together and just tried to make it painfully obvious that we were together, yet continue to tell them we weren't. Well we met up with everyone at P.F. Chang's for dinner and after we were all seated (at two tables, because the party was about 20 people) someone asked us if we had gotten back together and neither of us could keep a straight face and spilled the beans.

... this sounds really sad as I read it. Man, is my life that dull that I thought this was funny? Wow... let's just say its one of those things you had to be there for and leave it at that.

An interesting boring night

Last night I was driving to Starbucks to write my devotional for today and I got a phone call from a friend asking if I wanted to meet him and a few others up at Hooters to watch the Rockets game. Can you imagine my thoughts at the time? Writing a devotional... going to Hooters... awkward much?! I agreed to go and continued on my way to Starbucks. I had about 2 and a half hours before tipoff, so I walked around Market Street for a while and burned off some energy so my ADD butt could sit still long enough to write something, then I picked up a grande Peppermint Mocha (which I was skeptical about at first, but felt adventurous) and sat down and broke down James 1:13-15 in about 40 minutes. So I dropped off my Bible in my car, picked up my camera and proceeded to make myself look like a fool for the next hour and a half by laying down in the grasss, standing over a water fountain (and getting soaked), and just being my goofy self taking pictures of whatever caught my eye.
We showed up at Hooters and sat down to watch the game, BUT apparently Hooters only has 4 satellite channels and the Rockets game was NOT on any of these channels. So we hung out for a couple hours and at about 12 we decided that the game ought to be over and we all went home! How boring are we?

the lost room

So last night I was at home and was extremely lazy. I'm talkin' lazy as in it was a good thing I had started dinner before work and all I had to do was put it in the oven, otherwise I may not have eaten. Anywho, I was watching the scifi channel, because the remote was on top of the entertainment center and I didn't feel like standing up to get it, when this show called "the lost room" comes on. As with any other show on that channel, it was kindda wierd, but it really sucked me in. I think I ended up watching something like 4 hours of it. If you're like I was before yesterday and haven't heard of this show, its a mini-series about a motel room that holds everyday items with great powers, such as a hair comb that can stop time, and a clock that sublimates brass. Well there's this guy, Joe, and his daughter gets taken in this room and is lost, so Joe goes on a search, ready to tear the world apart, to find his daughter. If you don't mind a little of the supernatural in your show, I would highly recommend this show.

Help, I've fallen!

Well it happened again. Work started to cause stress and I lost my focus. I got so caught up in trying to keep up with work that I was trying to do it on my own. I can try to justify it all I want, but in the end the why doesn't matter. I still fell and still need to get back up. Obviously, because I am writing this, I have taken the first step and recognized that I fell (hello, my name is Alex, and I have sinned. {everyone says, hello Alex}) and now I am on the road back to recovery, but I need help (as always).

If you want to hear the details, here they are:
My boss took a few days off work one week, and was out the next. Because of this, and my being most senior on my team, I was placed in charge. I really don't mind being in charge, and I fit the bill fairly well when it comes to a management position, but with so many of the extra circumstances that came along this particular round, I began to feel strain under yoke. Much of the strain was self-inflicted and unnecessary, but I still let it take hold. At this point I began to try to deal with it on my own (BIG MISTAKE!) and sort of left God on the roadside telling Him that I had to deal with this first. I stopped writing my devotionals, and eventually came to an all out dryspell when it comes to cracking the Book all together. Up until last Wednesday, when I wrote my first devotional back, I had not opened the Bible since before Turkey Day.
I have been working on reading and writing with more frequency and dedication, and I have stepped up quite a bit, but as always, it is harder to get back up where I was than it was to fall down. I just ask that whoever can, please pray that I continue the treck back to not only where I was, but even further.

I'm 21 and I live in Houston, TX.
I get paid to be a computer nerd while surfing the internet all day.
I'm usually more of the "strong and silent" type (or so I'm told), so talking on this space thingy is going to be out of character and probably kindda wierd.
